Yvonne Report 16 Jan 2018 01:02

I'm trying to find the whereabouts of Robert Leach in the 1841 census. He was born in 1807 and was married to Mary Atkinson. The family is living in Back Acton St., Manchester in 1841 but Robert isn't with them. I know he didn't die before then because he moved to the Isle of Man and that's where he died.

Thanks.

Robert seems to have been a baker and an inn keeper. I have all the info about him right up to his death but I just can't find where he was in 1841.

Yvonne .....

.... I was asking about his occupation in case it would help identify him in the 1841.

safc tried to help me by posting that census

You might have all the information from later censuses, but we're coming at the search without any of that help!

I assume you have looked for Leech as well as Leach?

or even possibly a mistranscription such as Le*ck?

Robert Leach, wife Mary. Robert born Manchester 1808, buried Braddan 1878. Found them on the 1851 census much to my surprise after looking for years and years around the Manchester area. They lived 21 North Quay, he was a Baker. They had a daughter Sarah who married John Quay and a daughter Mary Ellen who married Edward Bell.

Edits (where does Alice Johnston, Sister in Law fit in?)

Thanks Malyon - I'm not sure that would be him. There's a Catherine Leach mentioned and I don't have a Catherine in that line.
Thanks Chris for your info and the message board site - I have been in touch with that person.
Nothing seems certain but I do wonder where Robert was - maybe he was in the IOM scouting out a home, but I don't find him in that census either.
Thanks for your help.

Think you need to know if Douglas is covered on 1841 for a start...(below looks helpful)

http://www.iomfhs.im/

Who does Alice Johnston relate to, where is she 1841?...

Chris :)

(Malyon can you delete that above please, it's not relevant)

On your posting there, see 'Delete' option...

Yvonne Report 17 Jan 2018 18:19

Thanks Chris. Not sure why I need to know if Douglas is covered on 1841 census though - am I missing something?

I thought of looking at Alice Johnston too and tried to find her marriage, but no look. I also couldn't find her on the census but I did only have a cursory look. I'll have to look a bit deeper.

Elizabeth, I did see the policeman bit but discounted it as I couldn't see it fitting in with my Robert at all.

Thanks.

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 17 Jan 2018 19:02

Thanks Chris. I can't seem to find anything that tells me whether Douglas is covered.

I've also been looking at Alice Johnston too. I can't find her in the census so I tried to find her with maiden name of Leach or Atkinson. The only one found was an Alice Leech married to John Atkinson in 1878, so that doesn't work.

I think Chris might have been wondering if Robert was already in the IoM in 1841.

Yes, I wondered that too but he's proving to be very elusive.

Thanks Chris - hope it didn't keep you up too late!

I'll have to digest this latest info and see where it gets me.

I did find an Alice married to a John Atkinson on 24 Apr 1878 and Alice's father was given as John Leech - not sure if it's relevant at all - I'll have to keep plodding.
