WhiffingSiggs Report 23 Apr 2018 08:30

Some years ago I saw a reference, and in my mind it was in the national archives, to the death of an ancestor of mine. I'm sure it was a newspaper article but maybe not. His name was James Whiffing Siggs and he died in dubious circumstances circa 1821. I didn't have full access to the archives and still don't, I have always meant to visit, maybe when I retire ! Does anyone have access to or know any other way of finding out about his death ? I'm off to work so I'll check back later, thank you.

You can search the National Archives for free - there doesn't seem to be anything for James , James W or James Whiffin/g Siggs.

"Jillyinnes" (a known relation of yours?) on this thread below says he was declared bankrupt in 1812:

And this below seems to show his imminent release from that in 1814:

The London Gazette - Part 1 - Page 826 - Google Books Result
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=HjhKAQAAMAAJ
Great Britain - 1814 - ?Gazettes
Dealer and Chapman, have certified to the Right Hon. the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, that the said James Whiffing Siggs hath in all things conformed himself according to the directions of the several Acts of Parliament made concerning Bankrupts: This is to give notice, that, by virtue of an Act passed in the fifth year of his late Majesty's reign, and also of an Act passed in the forty-ninth year of His present Majesty's reign, his Certificate will be allowed and confirmed as the said Acts direst, unless cause be shewn to the contrary on or before the 7th of May next.

Thanks everyone, I,d forgotten about the LMA site. Argyll Gran, you say I can order a document, would this be the coroners report ? Thank you all for your time, Kevin.

The reference, as posted above, says the document is in the Coroners Papers collection, so yes, I would guess so.

You can contact them to ask about that before ordering a copy.
