EDIT: The eye or pit-eye is the area at the bottom of the shaft.

So maybe the cage transporting the miners to the bottom of the pit shaft hit him as it came down?

There isn't a marriage in St. Helen's but there is this one in Billinge (which according to Google is only 3.5 miles from St. Helen's) but again only gives the wife's first name and there are other marriages in different places so can't be sure this is the correct one:-

James was born in St Helens in 1803, I wondered if anyone could tell me who his parents/siblings were, also he died in a pit accident at the Ravenhead colliery but I can't find any information online about it, can anyone tell me where to look ?
