I have Edward Smith aged 20 an engine fitter married Mary Jane Porritt aged 18 at Holy Trinity church, Throston, Hartlepool on 9 February 1873. Edward's father an engineer also called Edward and Mary Jane's father a grocer., called Jonathan. In 1881 for 40 James Street West Hartlepool Mary Jane is with her mother Mary Porritt aged 60, her brother Joseph 18 and her sister Margaret aged 14. Jonathan is dead. Mary Jane is 25 but says SINGLE. I can't find Edward on the 1881 census and can't find either of them in 1891. On 1871 census for Edward at Hartlepool it says born West Hartlepool. Can anyone find them? It's unfortunate they are called Smith. Thank you.

On the image for the 1881 census it says Mary Jane Smith is married.

Hello Kath, thanks I have only got access to familysearch and it says single so they must have transcribed it wrong.

Yes, on Findmypast the transcription says single but the image has married.

I can't find them on the 1891 census though. Do you know if they had children and if so what were their names?

I can't find any children on the GRO for Smith/Porritt, at least not theirs. Her cousin Mary (father Robert) married a George Smith from Newport Wales.

There are two Smith/Porritt births in Stockton in 1875 and 1877 which is not long after their marriage???

EDIT - no, you can forget these two. I have found them in 1881 with their widowed mother who is Alice.

I have a few posts regarding Porritt (added way back when no one kept to one thread) so I've added this post to this thread because it mentions Jonathan Porritt, the head of the family. On FMP in the Index to Death Duty Registers 1796-1903, there is an entry for Jonathan dated 1881 (he died 1879). Could someone please take a look to see what the entry actually says as I don't know what information is on the registers. This is the only information I require. I have a copy of his Will. I don't need any other information for Jonathan only the above death duty register. Thank you very much.
