Thomas was my 1 x gr grandfather. He was married twice, to Susan Jane Harland b 1840 - d 1880 (8 children) and Hannah Wedgwood b 1855- d 1933 (9 children including a stillbirth). From his marriage certificates I have noted his father was also called Thomas but that is it, a total brick wall!!

I haven't checked any of this myself, and a lot of it is unproved on the tree.
Much of the older info seems to be taken from other trees, so it's suspect until checked out.

In 1861 Thomas Snr. is noted as Master Carwright and here in 1871 he gives his occupation as Master Joiner, so I'm not sure why his son Thomas would give his father's occupation as a Labourer on his marriage certificate?

Catherine

This Thomas died in 1878

Name: Thomas Burns
Death Date: 18 Feb 1878
Death Place: Cumberland, England
Probate Date: 27 Mar 1878
Registry: Carlisle

Occupation:- Joiner
Late of Lorton
Executors:- sons Joseph and Richard, both of Lorton Joiners

so he had died by 1881

Could be of course that son Thomas was estranged from the family so just put down what he thought on the marriage record. Maybe he had some sort of problem with the family and that's why he left to live on the East coast, but that of course is just a theory??

Heather

Heather Report 22 Oct 2018 23:41

Hi, I noted that on the 1851 census Thomas then aged 7 is down as a scholar, this would lead me to believe he was at school, however in 1867 when he married his first wife he signed his marriage certificate with an'x', so not even able to sign his name.

With regards an estrangement there may be some truth in this if this is his family.

Heather ..................

1. Regarding your post ......... "Thomas father was down as a 'labourer' it did not state he was deceased in the second marriage cert of 1881."

This MAY not be true ..... a lot depends on what the vicar asked and what the person replied

For example, if the vicar asked "What is your father's name and occupation?"
The response could well be just that information, with no volunteering of the fact that father was dead. If the vicar did not then ask "Is he still alive?", then the certificate will not show him deceased.

If the vicar either asked "What is your father's name and occupation, and is he still alive?" .......... then you would get a fuller answer.

2. He might well have been a student but only for a short period, and may not have learnt to write. BUT it was the vicar who often put the' x' on the certificate ...... so he might well have assumed that Thomas couldn't write without even asking him!

Never entirely trust any information on any certificate!!!!
