Could someone please locate Alfred in the 1939 census. I believe he may have been living in Copford, Essex.

Thanks so much

Do you have a DOB for Alfred or did he have a second name? Is he likely to be on his own or with family? Are you sure he is alive?

The 1939 register doesn't show place of birth.

These are the only births of an Alfred Low 1874 +/- 2 years (all happen to be in the London area)

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
LOW, ALFRED HARRIS
GRO Reference: 1872 S Quarter in HACKNEY Volume 01B Page 501
LOW, ALFRED CROUCHER
GRO Reference: 1873 M Quarter in WEST HAM UNION Volume 04A Page 58
LOW, ALFRED GILKES
GRO Reference: 1874 S Quarter in HACKNEY Volume 01B Page 495
LOW, ALFRED EASTER RELF
GRO Reference: 1873 J Quarter in BETHNAL GREEN Volume 01C Page 209

The only Alfred Low (no other initials) in 1939 is in Surrey but born January 1873

Hadn't noticed that before (am I blind) - looking at the 1939 for Alfred in Surrey. Transcript shows 3 open and 2 closed records but original show another open record.

Back to transcript and below the last person is a "View 1 more occupants". Click on that and the 6th person is shown.

He was the son of Alfred Low and Louisa Gilkes so it look like he was born in the West Ham District in the third quarter of 1873.

He married Nellie Lefever in 1899. They had the following children. Loui Victor Low (1901), Robert Alfred Low (1902), Percival Leopold Low (1905), Sidney Walter Low (1909) Nellie Gracie Low (19070 and Daisy Low (1910).

I believe Alfred died in 1940 in Copford.

The Alfred with mmn Gilkes was born Hackney. So if registered within time limits (6 weeks allowed post birth) his DOB should be mid May-ish to end September 1874

LOW, ALFRED GILKES
GRO Reference: 1874 S Quarter in HACKNEY Volume 01B Page 495

(Parents Alfred Low and Louisa Maria Gilkes, married West Ham 1859)

1911 census shows Nellie born c1877 Stepney

A tree on ancestry has Nellie dying in 1919 and Alfred remarrying to an Elizabeth Allen (1876-1955) in Epping 1926.

Alfred's death is shown as 29.10.1940 Colchester RD
Probate record says of Copford Place, Main Road, Copford, Essex. Probate granted to Elizabeth Low widow and Louis Victor Low and Percival Leopold Low bulders

Buried 2 Nov 1940 Waltham Forest

Thanks for your help. I've got the family history. My mother in-law is Alfred's grand-daughter. She was reminiscing about playing at Alfred's house in Copford in the 1930s and I hoped to locate it and find out exactly who was living there.

I've seen that ....... I think what happens is that someone has had the record opened by submitting a death certificate, but the transcript has not yet been changed

Another reason it always pays to open the image whenever possible!

Hi Sylvia ....... only noticed it today.

The way the transcript looks on FMP has changed fairly recently. Whoever's name you look up, say Joe Smith, the transcript page is headed - Joe Smith's life in 1939 !!

Had a look at a few more examples and it seems to me that only 5 people maximum are shown initially. If there are more than that in the household there will be the added "View -- more occupants. --- being the number of however many more there are in the household, whether open or closed, that are on the original.

oh ....... I hadn't noted that last!

Yet another reason not to rely only on a transcription!!!
