I am searching for any details pertaining to my paternal grandfather who I have named in the subject heading.

I know that he was born in 1910 possibly October and that his parents were William and ?Ethel Ann? Spiers. His father died in WW1 and we think his mother re-married hence the query surrounding surname.

William Edgar Spiers married my grandmother in June 1944 and was posted abroad by the army (Army number 1868086 REME is all the information I have in this respect) subsequently after their marriage - they had a child Michael Eden (my father) in 1945 and as far as I know, he remained abroad on army duties until 1947.

He returned to the UK in 1947 and the only further record I can find is that he left the country on a ship bound for Jamaica and he was using the surname Eden at this point.

Any help or suggestion as to where to go from here would be gratefully received.

(I have tried searching for him using birth details to no avail and I can't find him on the 1911 census. I have also tried searching his army number on their records but no-one with his name/number is listed.)

Kindest regards,

Cassie Moxon

??? Long shot - haven't checked this out yet -

SPIERS, WILLIAM EDGAR -
GRO Reference: 1912 D Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 06B Page 1538

EDIT:
No, your Wiliam's parents were married.

EDIT again:
But I don't see any likely marriage of his parents, nor any sign of them in 1911.

Where did you find the names of his parents?

Military records after 1920 are still with the MoD. That’s why you can’t find anything online.

You can order a copy for £30 although there could be a wait of several months

Cassie, On the marriage cert to Iris, does it actually give middle name as Edgar or are you assuming that since you found the record for the WE Eden going to Jamaice?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 May 2019 17:43

There’s a birth matching the OP’s statement about her father. The details from the cert may prove illuminating - particularly the father's details

One has to wonder why the surname apparently changed in the short time between the marriage and the birth.

Thank you to you all for the various information I garnered. I was able to find out a little more and have now been in contact with my great uncle (William Edgar's younger brother) who is 94 and has filled me in on a great deal of the family history! :-D <3
