How did you work back to him?

Have you looked for variants of the surname?

You could get a copy of the marriage cert for the one found in 1871. - see whether he named a father

Where was Harriet in 1851?

I am looking for information about Robert Metcalf born 1839 In Wickhambrook Suffolk. i found his baptism date which is 3rd February 1839 at All Saints Wickhambrook Suffolk and his mother is Harriet Metcalf and no fathers name. He is in 1841 census with John and Susan Metcalf and one of their children is Harriet born 1817 in Whepstead Suffolk. I think that this could be Roberts mum. I can't find him in the 1851 or 1861 census.in the 1871 census there is a Robert Metcalf married with a child called Harriet he is a farmer. If anyone could help that would be great. i wondered if this is him where he was in 1851 and 1861. Thank you for your help.
