Charles emigrated to South Africa about 1879 and I know a lot about him from there on. He is my late wife's grandfather.
I have tried through various channels to discover his birth details without success. I hope to trace his ancestry back to another Riley, a retired gunner in the East India Artillery who took discharge on the island and about whom I have a lot of info.
Charles married twice and lived in Bechuanaland. I have all the details of his second marriage but do not know the name of his first wife who died about 1890 and is supposed to be buried in Kanye, Botswana. She had two children James (my wife's father) and Katherine of whom again I have all the details but records of births, marriages and deaths in Botswana or Mafeking at that time were very sketchy..
