Look at that Address on 1891 Census posted (James Haworth) it's the one William gave on his Marriage 1887...(James is the Son of William, who Harry Card is with 1881)

(as said, the family could have 'taken' him in, perhaps it was them that told him of Father Albert, and the circumstances, seeing how he knew of Annie Ridgway, for his son James to know about her, that's if Annie was the Mother, mystery!)

(as also said before, would get that Will of Albert Card 1873, see what it says, maybe he wasn't aware of a Son!)

Carter Report 6 Oct 2019 07:41

William Henry Card married Jane Grimshaw and one of their children was a son named James Card 1887 - 1917

I found his ww1 army records and in them it says
grandparents of the soldier ANNIE RIDGEWAY, address unknown

his maternal grandmother was ALICE BRADSHAW so it cant be her so I was wondering if this Annie rRdgeway was William Henry's mum ??

I have looked on freebmd, lancopc and Lancashire bmd for a birth of Annie Ridgeway . my thinking was if she was William henry's mum then she might not have married but if she had then is there any chance of finding her.

thanks Linda

Anyone got any ideas ?

Thank you

Linda

everyone on here is wonderful as usual.

I am always amazed at how you can collate information so quickly.

Im not too sure about the Haworth family connection and if someone could explain it for me .

I am surmising that there is no way that I can find out when and where William henry card was born.

I am contemplating a visit to Lancashire records office soon and is there anything I could ask to see that might help me

once again thank you all so much for your help

Here's an Alberta Card, buried in the same cemetery as the Albert who died in 1873, and who was on the same ship "Palmas". Could this possibly be Albert's sister Alberta ??? - see 1871 census above:

Gravestone says" Alberta Card, died on board ship Palmas, off Antigua, West Indies, Nov 25th 1871, aged 18 years."

EDIT:
Yes, it will be the same Alberta.
On another face of the gravestone there's a memorial to Ernest E Card, who is Albert and Alberta's brother Ernest Eugene (Eugene on 1871 census ).

Ernest Eugene Card
in the Canada, Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current
Name: Ernest Eugene Card
Death Date: 25 out 1873 (25 Oct 1873)
Cemetery: Card Skaling Burying Ground
Burial or Cremation Place: Summerville, Hants County (Hants), Nova Scotia, Canada

"2nd Officer on Board Ship Palmas Died at Kempt OCt 25 1873 age 18yrs"
on stone.

Not a lucky ship for the Card family.

Thank you so much for your help.
the 1901 and 1911 census are spot on and the marriages of his children are correct.
I'm beginning to think that Albert might be the one who went to Canada because there is no sight of him anywhere.
Williams mum might have not have registered his birth if she was an unmarried mother.
It really is a conundrum .

I really do appreciate all the help you have given me

If he was in Liverpool for a few months, he could well be William's father, and then returned to Nova Scotia before the 1871 census.

William's birth is probably registered under his mother's surname, and perhaps he only started using the name Card when he was older..

Yes , it is a possibility that the Albert who died at sea in 1873 might have been William's father.
The probate notice does say that Charles Jeramiah was his father.

In which case, this would be Albert in 1871:

Carter Report 4 Oct 2019 15:52

Sorry if I sound a bit dim but am I right in thinking that the Calvert in the will could be William's father but died very young.
I'm struggling to get my head around this. Doesn't help I'm on my break at work
I'll keep looking for William's birth or see if I can find him on the 1881census
Thank you everyone for your help
Linda

I would doubt that William actually knew his father

Look carefully at the info - which shows that Albert was only 21 when he died.
