Hi, the 1939 register shows a Cyril Walker who was at a naval training base in Hampshire. He went there in 1938. His guardian had signed his papers and thisis the address they had given. I am afraid this is all I know. I am looking to find out more information about Mr W Turner, the guardian. Thanks for your help. Pauline

I can find Chapel Road Strood but only a few houses and not that one. You can'walk' down Chapel Road on Google maps, via this link which is connected to a flat in "Medtha House" Isle of Grain, Rochester , but the majority of houses are new, perhaps the original was demolished prior to 1939?

Fo instance it doesn't show on the 1911, but Chapel Road does as "registration district Hoo, Isle of Grain Kent

Medtha House is not coming up on FMP search, possibly called something else then?

Hi Sylvia, thank you for clarifying that for me. I have looked for the 1939 register on Ancestry and cannot find what I am looking for.

Pauline .............

It is not a census.

The 1939 REGISTER was taken in preparation for the outbreak of WW2, and is a record of all people living in England and Wales(Scotland has a separate register).

It shows their birth date (not always correct!), marital status and occupation. People under the age of 100 (or 120) are blacked out unless the Register was updated.

The Register also formed the basis for the NHS when that came into operation, and was constantly updated until ca 1990/1991

The Register is now available on both Ancestry and FindMyPast, which are subscription sites. Both sites are now slowly updating the Register.

It is possible for you to search the Register on either of those sites for free, if you do not have a subscription to one or both. You will be able to see the if the person is there, but no details. You can then ask someone on here to check the image for you.l
