Nowadays locally it is often difficult to get an appointment to register a death within the 5 day limit.

I think deaths registered after an inquest might be quite some time after the actual death.

As stated, the M refers to the quarter of registration rather than the actual date of death.

And in case you don't know - 6 weeks is allowed in which to register a birth, so someone born mid November ish 1922 might be registered Mar Qtr 1923.

You might also see the Quarters referred to as Q1/ Q2 / Q3 /Q4 - that way follows the Monthly system

The quarter given is the quarter in which the death was registered, but as Kay says, a death registered in Jan-Mar quarter could have taken place any time between 27 December (24 Dec in Scotland) and 31 March.

You're allowed 5 days to register a death in England or Wales, or 8 days in Scotland.

If in the England/Welsh indexs.

January to March of that year,is always defined as M quarter,

It wont be May as that comes within April---June quarter and defined as,,,,,,,

J quarter,

Jan-/March====M
April /June=====J
July/September===S
October/Decmeber==D.

3 monthly stages.4 quarters covering all 12 months.

(( in some cetain circumstances as an example a death on the 31 st December 1922 may well be in the Janurary--to March indexes,))
