Hayward Coopey (1828 Twigworth Glos) and Ann (1826 Dymock Glos) had 7 children.

The first two, Martin 1848 and Julia Ann 1850 had MMN of Eynon.

The other 5, Charles 1855, Willliam Hubert 1857, Martin 1859, Clara, 1863 and Leah1868 had MMN of Onions

The cencus has the Mother's detail the same for both MMN,

On the face of it there was just one mother BUT the different MMN says otherwise. My gut says only one mother, but I cannot prove one way or the other

Kay????

Kay???? Report 21 May 2020 13:47

Think of local accents,, could be a reason what was mis-heard?

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 21 May 2020 13:54

Was just about to say the same Kay.

Have you looked at the 1841 census to see if there is an Ann Eynon or Ann Onions? Have you looked for a marriage record to see what name is given there? If there are 2 mothers then the first probably died so have you checked for a death of an Ann Coopey between 1850 and 1855?

These are just things to try but my instinct is that the registrar wrote down what he thought he heard and that there is probably only one mother.

that is very much my thinking but......

I completely agree with Vera and Kay.
If it were my tree, I would have absolutely no doubt .

It's just a variation of spelling because of how the registrar thought it should be spelled
.
Many people were illiterate in those days, and wouldn't know if their name was spelled correctly or not.
Not that there was really a "correct" way to spell names at that time in any case.

"The Spelling of Surnames
It is commonly accepted that for the printed word, the spelling system became standardised by the end of the seventeenth century. Powerful influences had been the introduction of the printing press (with spelling conventions set by the printers) and the publication of dictionaries.
This standardisation was not echoed in the recording of surnames. Famously, Shakespeare had 5 other variants of his name, in his lifetime. Indeed, standardisation did not arrive until the advent of mass literacy in the twentieth century. In my initial analysis of the 1900 Portsmouth Burgess Rolls, I am struck by the lack of name standardisation. And this in a section of the populace that one would expect to have a higher incidence of literacy."

All names have the chance of miss-spelling back then as not that many people could read or write so they wouldn't knw if someone had written their name correctly or not.

The first son Martin's baptism gives his name as Cuppey:-

First name(s) Martin
Last name Cuppey

Baptism year 1848
Baptism date 30 Jul 1848

Mother's first name(s) Ann
Mother's last name -

You have to be flexible and use your own judgement.
