Beverley Report 5 Jun 2020 10:39

Hi all, I am trying to trace the family of my 2 x ggrandmother Elizabeth Ann Carter born Portsea 1851/52. Her father is mentioned as Henry Carter a shoemaker on her marriage to Edward Beck 1870. I have drawn a blank on finding her family and wondered if anyone has her in their tree or any knowledge about her family. Thanks in advance, Bev

The Harry Carter/Elizabeth Giles marriage might fit the 1861 census I posted earlier (at 11:32), with Henry and Elizabeth Carter and niece Elizabeth Binstead.

I had wondered if the Carters might have adopted Elizabeth , or at least she might have been using their name by the time she married.

BUT -
that Elizabeth had no middle name at birth.

And she couldn't be the niece of a Carter/Giles couple when her mms was Thomas.
(Maybe it doesn't mean literally "niece" ?).

And Henry's not a shoemaker.

Beverley Report 5 Jun 2020 18:23

Rose Ann Beck and a William Hennery Dowden was the witnesses. Rose is the sister of Edward her husband. I am just foxed about it as ive been through different families and e.g James and Miriam Carter as parents just doesnt add up. Ive even tried to go through DNA matches on Ancestry and i end up completely bogged down and off track! I have a DNA match with 2 people 20-22 centimorgans who have a James Carter born 1832 Gosport who possibly could be a father but even their trees do not seem to link with my Elizabeth. Thats aside from the fact she has stated her father as Henry the shoemaker! I also cant find her on an 1861 census which would possibly solve some of the puzzle . Thanks all, Bev
