Ancestry's version of the Canadian 1911 census posted by Rootgatherer - for place.
(If this is your Alfred, he's obviously not the one in the army record above. He also can't be the father of Alfred junior 1914, unless Alfred junior was just registered with the Winder name because that was Hilda's name, regardless of who young A's father was):

An address (don't know what date): 17 Barfold Square, Armley.

rootgatherer Report 28 Sep 2020 21:04

Well done safc and ArgyllGran. So the Alfred with the Deakin family would seem to be a red herring. He emigrated in 1895. Not sure why the original poster thought he was the Alfed with middle name Storr.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 28 Sep 2020 21:21

Alfred Storr Winder's birth was registered in the June quarter of 1890 so unless it was a late registration he wasn't born 1889.

The one in Canada was probably one of the other two listed below.

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
WINDER, ALFRED PALMER
GRO Reference: 1890 S Quarter in ISLINGTON Volume 01B Page 342
WINDER, ALFRED HENRY LEWIS
GRO Reference: 1890 S Quarter in PANCRAS Volume 01B Page 120
WINDER, ALFRED STORR LONDESBOROUGH
GRO Reference: 1890 J Quarter in BRAMLEY Volume 09B Page 374

It would be useful if Anthony could say why he thought his Alfred should be with the Deakin family in Canada.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2020 09:39

Assuming it's Alfred Storr Winder whom Anthony wants to know about, then I agree that he is NOT the one who emigrated in 1895 aged 8, and who maybe lived with the Deakins and married Louise..

All the other records posted are correct for Alfred Storr Winder - ie - 1911 UK census, marriage to Hilda Cooper., death and 1939 for the son Alfred, and the army records.

His birth is the mms Londesborough one - although his age is therefore a year out on the army record. Age 27 yrs 9 mths in April 1917 gives YOB 1889.

Parents' marriage:

Marriages Sep 1889 (>99%)
Londesborough Clara Bramley 9b 602
Winder Joseph Bramley 9b 602

He was presumably in Canada at least by 1938, when the police were enquiring about him, but I don't see any definite Canadian records for him.

I expect Anthony's just grasping at straws with the Deakins' lodger.
There are lots of records for that man - Voters Lists, etc, up to the 1960's - but nothing obvious for Alfred Storr.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2020 09:44

Anthony has Alfred Winder, born 1914 in New Wortley , Leeds. in hs GR tree, so it must be Alfred Storr that he's interested in.

Anthony Report 29 Sep 2020 20:05

Wow! Many thanks to everybody. The Alfred Storr Winder is the one married to Hilda Cooper. who he left circa 1920/23 to sail to Canada. supposedly, as he borrowed the fare from his sister Clara and never paid her back. I believe that she was in touch with him from time to time. He was my Grandfather who I never met and he was never forgiven for leaving his wife Hilda.to bring up her son by herself. He never sent her any money from Canada and just wonder if he had any children in Canada. The police request for info is most likely to chase him for none payment of maintenance for his son, also named Alfred Storr Winder. .

I think the address in Leeds in 1917 to which AG refers was Far Fold Square

Not that it helps with the actual enquiry ;-) ;-)

Anthony Report 1 Oct 2020 18:42

:-)Many thanks for trying.
Do you think that he could show up in any Canadian death records?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 2 Oct 2020 11:46

Canadian records are much less readily- available than the UK equivalents

They are much stricter about privacy

Google to find out exactly what is published online

EDITED

I've done just that.................

There is no central registry of births and deaths in Canada. Canadian birth and death certificates must be obtained from the vital statistics office of the province in which the event occurred. They cannot be obtained through the Canadian Embassy.

How Do I Find Death Records? Death records are managed by the state's vital records office as well as the various health departments. To obtain these records, interested and eligible parties may contact the appropriate office for information regarding the record retrieval requirements of the jurisdiction.

Much more to read up on - check it out

mgnv

mgnv Report 6 Oct 2020 10:49

The British North America Act 1867 was effectively the constitution of Canada, and was based on the constitution of the UK.
Since there is no central repository for UK BMDs, it should not be a surprise there's no central repository for Canadian BMDs.

In the case of Ontario deaths, they are all public records. However, no index is available for 70 y, so to get a more recent d.cert, you pretty much have to know what's on it to avoid multiple search fees.
So given the delay in transcribing for Ancestry, FS, etc., or guy would have had to have died by at least his 50s to make the online available databases.

My guess re the police enquiry is that he'd applied to join the police, and this was a background check.
