The Kate Saunders marriage was in Southampton reg district - unless I'm confused.

But in any case that Kate Saunders married Charles William Prior, as already shown.

Baptism of one of the sons, as further proof:

Edward George Prior
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name Edward George Prior
Gender Male
Baptism Date 1 Jul 1883
Baptism Place Holy Trinity, Fareham, Hampshire, England
Father Charles William Prior
Mother Kate
FHL Film Number 1596131

Are you discounting the Kate Saunders marriage because it was Lewisham? This could also be referred to as part of London and may have covered parts of Surrey.

Gerald Report 12 Apr 2023 12:42

Thanks all. I know George married a second time. In Romford, 1910, to a Florence Woods, stated he was a widower, and a Journeyman Carpenter age 64. There is a death for a Kate Pearce just before that, but Kate says born London, or Surrey depending which Census 1891/ 1901 you look at. I think I can discount the marriage to Kate Saunders. As for George Edward Pearce b 1843. It looks like that has a mothers maiden name of Ingram. The only Pearce/Ingram marriage suggests groom was Robert, not George. However there is a tree on Ancestry saying that George Edward died in 1855. Of course I am assuming George did marry a Kate rather than just in a relationship, plus Kate could be Catherine, Katherine etc. just unable to pin his first marriage and birth down. Will persevere……

Click on Add Reply near your 1st posting on this thread, then we will all be able to share details and hopefully help.

Please will you post details on this thread regarding the 2nd marriage. Please include occupations, status and witness names.

Bear in mind that Southampton was the administrative name for Hampshire,at that time, so George might not have been born in the city of Southampton.

I am also chasing someone said to have been born in Southampton around that time, but I've spent hours scouring records in Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, but have never found his birth or baptism.

Re the suggested 1890 marriage posted by Shirley -

I think George Pearce's inclusion on that transcription is a mistake.

I think this is the correct transcription for that man's marriage:

Marriages Sep 1890 (>99%)
MARTIN Harriet Lewisham 1d 1713
Pearce George Lewisham 1d 1713

Looking at the image of the Index, the final figure of the page number is blurry, and could be either 3 or 8.

Why does George need to tell you how he worked back when he has already told you that he has found him on all the census from 1881?

Added: Gerald, have you discounted the George Edward Pearce born in 1843 Southampton?

How did you work BACK to this man?

To find out details of any marriage, if it isn’t online, buy a copy of the cert from the GRO

Did his second marriage declare him as bachelor or widower ?

What status was he on census before the Romford marriage

Edit he says he is unmarried on the 1881 census and is in East Ham

Was this the marriage record that you found??

from Freebmd ........

Marriages Sep 1881 (>99%)
PEARCE George Southampton 2c 33
Prior Charles William Southampton 2c 33
Saunders Kate Southampton 2c 33
TIZARD Elizabeth Southampton 2c 33

The Hibberd Family Tree on Ancestry has this marriage ......

Kate Saunders
1857–1903

Jul 1881
Southampton, Hampshire, England
Spouse
Charles William Prior <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
1858–1886

with children Edward George b.1883 and Hednry b. 1885

From GRO ......

PRIOR, EDWARD GEORGE SAUNDERS
GRO Reference: 1883 J Quarter in FAREHAM Volume 02B Page 590
PRIOR, EDWARD GEORGE SAUNDERS
GRO Reference: 1883 J Quarter in FAREHAM Volume 02B Page 590
PRIOR, HENRY SAUNDERS
GRO Reference: 1885 S Quarter in FAREHAM Volume 02B Page 556

mmn for both is Saunders, so looks as if this is NOT the Kate marriage you're looking for.

I'm not sure why Edward George's is there twice, may be a mistake by GRO.

I've checked the years from 1881 to 1893 and don't see any births surname Pearce with mmn Tizard.

Researching a George Pearce, says born Southampton circa 1845 as per ages declared on 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census and at death. Believe he “ married” someone called Kate, Ended up in Romford. Unable to pin his birth or marriage down. Second marriage in Romford he declares father was George Pearce, a dockworker. Found a marriage in 1881 to a Kate Saunders, Southampton. Can anyone help check Southampton archives for marriage to establish fathers name on marriage? Any help gratefully acknowledged. Have found a few George Pearce’s in area in and around Southampton, but have been able to discount some of them.
