from the 1861 census there is a son William Hodgson age 2. GRO has the registration 1858 but with no mother's maiden name recorded. Henry's son or George's?

Edit - found William's baptism - mother Hannah so grandson to Wilhelmina not son as stated in census

Hi Everyone

Having purchased a copy of Kirkbride/Hodgson 1859 marriage I find that Wilhelmina’s farther is named on there (having previously been informed, by a former trusted searcher, not Ancestry, professional etc, who supposedly has a copy, that he wasn’t named!!! beyond me why she lied but hey ho it takes all sorts)

Frank Ward, Farrier, deceased

Wilhelmina and George were both residing at Red Barn, Dacre when they married, she a widow 55yr, he a bachelor 45yr.

I’ve searched for a death up to 1859 for Frank, one did stand out in Barrow 1854 but when I investigated on the GRO website it was Barrow on Soar not Barrow in Furness as I hoped it might be.

I’m still no further on with this info, any suggestions please

TBH, unlikely for 200-year- old records to be anywhere except the Records office.

Could it be worth a trip to Carlisle archives? I’ve looked at their online stuff but “no results”?

Might take a trip back to Darce on Sunday, see if I can see the vicar, maybe the records are still in the church…also a great reason to have lunch in Mungrisdale !!!

Thank you

The first marriage would be the clincher, but there is no online record of it as far as can be seen

The name Mcculloch on the Ancestry tree is because that's one of Ancestry's suggestions and the tree owner has assumed the suggestion is fact - but there's no proof that that's the same person:

Wilhelmina Mcculloch
in the Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
Name Wilhelmina Mcculloch
Gender Female
Birth Date 14 Jan 1799
Birth Place Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland
Father Andrew Mcculloch
Mother Wilhelmina Honyman

Just shows one can seldom rely on Ancestry trees

If she didn't know her father's identity, you've probably hit the proverbial 'brick wall'

No idea why that would be as she’s on 1851 census with Henry and Jame Hodgson, her name also being Hodgson….

She didn’t become Kirkbride until 1859

Henry’s parents were Joseph and Hannah, Henry died 1852 (have the image), Henry born Lowther 1797

Who is named as her father on her marriage cert?

Marriages Dec 1859 (>99%)
Hodgson Wilhelmina Penrith 10B 519
Kirkbride George Penrith 10b 519

Could you re-think the date of her first marriage? ;-) ;-)

Mistycat Report 23 Oct 2023 16:22

Having searched the “usual place’s” I can’t find or think of anywhere else to look for Wilhelmina’s birth/baptism

Born 1799 Scotland? (from census 1841 through 1881) Married Henry Hodgson, possibly Dacre, Cumberland (Penrith) sometime before 1841, 7 children first one in 1825, maiden name taken from second youngest son’s (James Hodgson 1838) birth image.

She married George Kirkbride 15 October 1859 (Penrith) after Henry Hodgson’s death.

She died 10 September 1883 (I have image) age given 84

The name McCulloch is given for her on an Ancestry tree but I’ve no idea why

Can anyone help please

Edited re marriage to Henry!!
