A DNA test should show Edith as she is a direct ancestor but not to Thomas as he assumed not to be.
So a DNA test would not be relevant to Thomas with Edith, but to say Thomas and Edith can be confusing if you are struggling to get one’s head around dna matched,

The unknown quantity here is Annie's father...........and Edith's, who are not necessarily one and the same - when one takes into account the seven year difference in their ages. Their mother's line is easily followed

Why? The DNA could possibly prove it one way or another.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 20 Feb 2025 12:23

A DNA test taken by Amanda would have no bearing on Thomas and Edith.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Feb 2025 17:54

It'll be easier to get Thomas and Edith's marriage cert , at least for a start, to find out his age and his father's details.

If that doesn't lead anywhere, then maybe think again about DNA - but that seems as if it wouldn't be very helpful in the circumstances.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 19 Feb 2025 17:40

It might lead you somewhere but it looks as though you would have to put in some hard work yourself but might end up no further forward,

Hi,

I am thinking of doing a DNA test, I would like to find out about my father side of the family. It like he magicked out of the sky one day.

My dad mum said of the family is a mystery. My dad would never speak about is family. I asked my sister if she remembers anything and she told me the same. Dad would never speak about is family.

I was hoping that the DNA test might solve to issues.

The only person of my dad family l know was is older sister. The Knox side l have found lots of thigs, but the Colclough side.........

Would the DNA test help with this

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 19 Feb 2025 14:56

Re the DNA test - it depends on what you are hoping to find and whether you have the ability to work through the clues you get,
Like any family history research you’ve got to be prepared to do the work.
It won’t, for instance, tell you who your parents are unless they have tested. It won’t tell you whether your matches are from your father or mother’s side,it is up to you to work it out. So if no relation you know has tested it can be difficult to sort out which side you are looking at, unless one parent has a unique profile.

BEWARE - you find out things you would rather not have known.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2025 14:33

Absolutely no interest in doing so....................

Some people on here have, I know. Understanding the complexity of the results seems to be something of a minefield.

If you know for certain who your parents were, I'm not sure what benefit you would find in taking it. By definition, DNA gives results relating to the person tested.

Have any of you done the Ancestry DNA test ?

If so is it any good.
