Hello
I am struggling to find John Alfred Wright born 5/3/1897 in Pipewell, Northamptonshire on the 1921 census. I have found his birth, 1901 , 1911 and 1939 register along with his death in 1980 however can not find him in 1921 or his WW1 Army record. I appreciate the latter may have been destroyed. If this is him in 1939, the 5.3.1897 DOB is not as given on the Death registration

The 2 named children shown would appear to be from the Wright/Gubbings marriage
and there was a 3rd child born 1934 - all Market Harborough RD

1939 Register
West Street, Welford, Brixworth R.D., Northamptonshire, England

Mary's date is incorrect too. It should be 17th May 1901. It is the correct family though :-)

Thank you Maddie
I am now guessing he was still in the Military and as that is not seemingly available is frustrating as there is nothing from 1911 - 1939. Apart from the marriage in 1924. I will have to perhaps purchase the certificate to see what it says.
Family say he was a Regimental Sargeant Major however I can find nothing :-(
Anything else you might find would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you everyone for looking
:-D

While you are waiting for the certificate check out where his regiment was stationed. If they were overseas this could also explain why he was missing off the census.

For info: workers on a night shift who were working on the night of the census are not generally included as they were ‘not at home’ on the date of the census. For instance, in mining communities households were often shown with ‘wife of miner’ with the husband not appearing anywhere else.
If someone was travelling overnight then they were ‘not at home’.
All sorts of reasons for not appearing on the census.

His occupation will be on the birth certs of children

An RSM is a career soldier - one would have expected him still to be serving in 1939 if he had achieved that rank, which is actually Warrant Officer, Class 1. The highest rank attainable without actually being commissioned

Military records from 1920 are not online............they are either with the MoD or at the National Archives

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 23 Feb 2025 14:19

If he served during WW1 he could have gained rank quicker than usual and he may have been medically unfit for later service or if he had left the army and had’t yet been recalled.

Finding where his Regiment was based would require knowing which Regiment he was with

I suspect this could be him in 1921? Sorry the layout on fmp is not the best...just read every second line.

1921 included military personnel. 1939 did not because the country was at war

Only if you were in barracks.

1921 is great thank you
Where would I look to see if there is any military record?

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 26 Feb 2025 17:22

Try Ancestry & national archives.

A lot depends on when he left the army. He obviously remained in the Army after WW1 so his records will not be included on that. It may be that you will have to apply for his records - at a cost.

WW11 records are slowly being digitised and released.
