Claire, Unbeknown to me I had an Uncle Harold Cornell. He may be too old to have been your Grandfather - he was born in 1885 in Peckham/Camberwell. In 1910 he married Gertrude Christine Marie Deer but had no chldren. It is possible that Gertrude died & Harold married again and if they had no children they may have adopted.

The Cornell family lived in Bethnal Green, East London, in Essex and the Shelfords near Cambridge. Harold settled in Essex and was in the furniture trade.

Harold's Uncle - Augustus Benjamin Cornell (Cabinet Maker/Undertaker) emigrated to Ontario (Goderich) c. 1870 and raised a family of nine. Harold's eldest brother, Alfred Austin Cornell, emigrated to British Colombia c.1908. (Vancouver). There seems to have been a fair amount of journeying between England and Canada, and between Ontario & British Colombia. This may account for the only death of a Harold Cornell that I can find to fit with family "legend" is in British Colombia in 1938.

None of this may be of help to you but I am writing on the offchance that something may provide you with a clue to your father's famiily.
Very best of luck
Janice nee Cornell
