Origins of the name Michie Several theories have been proffered as to the origin and meaning of the name Michie: (1) The World Book of Michies, published by Halbert's Family Heritage in 1991, states that 'the name Michie appears to be locational in origin. Our research indicates that it can be associated with the Scottish, meaning, 'one who came from or lived near Michael.''' (2) The Dictionary of American Family Names, published by Oxford University Press, states that the name is Scottish, and 'from the old personal name Michie, a pet form of Michael.'' (presumably in the same way as Micky or Mickey). (3) The Michie Families of Aberdeenshire, written around 1905 by Charles Michie of Calcutta, lists several families with the name Mihi, hypothesizing that the meaning may in fact stem from the Latin 'mihi,' meaning 'to me.' Michie is also a Japanese first name, meaning 'gateway; gracefully dropping flower.' |
