BURGIN For many of us with an Irish connection, the above spelling is an Anglicised version of the original surname. In Counties Offaly, Laois and Kilkenny the usual spelling is BERGIN, though many of our ancestors who were unable to read/ write found their surnames being corrupted to BERGAN, BURGON, BURGAN, BERIGAN and the now more usual BURGIN on arrival in England. In the 1300s the name was used in a court case and given as O'BERGYN - this, again, being an English form of the original Gaelic: Ó hAimheirgin - (O) Bergin - Co Offaly - chiefs of Geashill. Phonetically, the pronunciation would have sounded more like O'Merriggyn or O' Vergin |
