Trying to find Urquhart

Hi Victoria,

I am afraid that searching records in Scotland is not so cheap as for England or Wales because the website www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk hold the main records and that is a pay per view site, plus any extracts ordered cost £10 each (or at least they did the last time I sent for some). On the plus side if you do find the birth/marriage/death record and download the details they do give more information than the English/Welsh certificates.

If you are a member of Ancestry.co.uk then you can view transcrips of census returns for Scotland but not the original images.

Good Luck with the searching,
Patsy

Hello Katherine,

I am a relative of Marian as we share the same gt. gt. grandfather Hector Urquhart and the problem we have in going back any earlier is we have no records of him with any family members. By 1841 he had moved from the Black Isle / Inverness area to Aberdeen and can be found working as a baker on the 1841 census. Unfortunately he is a 'lodger' and there are no other family members with him.

It has been passed down the generations that the family came from the Black Isle and some census records back up that information, while one states he came from Inverness - it is a case of take your pick at the moment!

We do know that the Hector Urquhart recorded on the IGI born 1814 on the Black Isle with parents Christopher Urquhart & Ann McKenzie is not 'our' Hector because that one can be found still living on the Black Isle at the time of the 1841 census with his brothers & sisters.

Our Hector married Margaret Campbell Graham on 25th May 1842 at Bon Accord Church, Aberdeen. Their first daughter Margaret Collie Urquhart was christened on 6th April 1843 by Rev. Hugh McKenzie, in the presence of William Pringles & William Stephen, so again no other Urquhart family members mentioned! She grew up to marry William Foster Shiel.

Their second daughter named Susan was christened on 7th March 1845, but no other Urquharts are mentioned on the extract. She grew up to marry Edward Dockwray Freeman.

Their first son named Hector was probably born in Scotland just after the 1851 census but we can't find any record of a christening. We know he existed because he died on 13th December 1855 (aged 4) in Corstophine Town, South Shields, and was buried on the 15th at Holy Trinity Church, South Shields.

Hector & Margaret's other children were Christiana/Christina born c1849, Aberdeen. She married Richard Jeffels.

Hugh Urquhart born 1855, South Shields. He married a Mary Jane Dryden.

Hector Urquhart born 26th March 1858, South Shields. He married Mary Jane Berry & Ellen Berry - but not at the same time!

Jane Urquhart born 1860, South Shields. She married Edward Middleton Robson.

Hannah Mary Urquhart, born 1863 South Shields, and she died in 1889 also in South Shields.

I don't know if any of these names are repeated in your family tree, but I do know that names were frequently repeated down the generations - lost count of the Hectors!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck with your searching.

Hello Marian
I am clutching at straws, strangely I have a niece named Marian and I have noticed on my research how names seem to run through the family tree.
I have a Charles Urquhart born c1820 and I am wondering if he could have been a sibling of Hector?.
Charles married a Jane Hammond and they had a son Alexander born c1845 . Alexander married Catherine Martin and they had 3 children, Charles b.1867, Peter, b1869 and Jane 1872. Peter is my Grandfather, he had 2 sons Gordon and Douglas. Please can you let me know if any of these names appear in your tree. I know the family originated from Inverness.
Kind Regards
Katherine
