CHARLES DOUGLAS WRIGHT (I think). I believe he was born in Australia. Married Catherine (born Ireland c1851). Family lore says he was an army doctor, later owned a Chemist in Manchester called Wright and Barnaby or Barnaby and Wright. Children were AUGUSTUS (1866 Aldershot - which bears out the army theory), EDWIN (1868? Gibraltar), MARY ANN MABEL (1868 Gibraltar), HANNAH (1873 Melbourne - Australia?), CAROLINE (1875 Melbourne), ALICE (1877 Melbourne), LOUISA (1879 Melbourne). In 1881 mother and children were living in Whitechapel, but no sign of father. The puzzle is how did a family who should have been fairly well off (father's pay would presumably have been good) come to be in one of the poorest parts of London? Can anyone confirm that father's name is correct, supply Catherine's maiden name, and tell me what happened to the family (apart from Mary Ann who was my great grandmother)? |
