I wonder if anyone can help me. I am looking for my Great Great Grandad Henry Gilbert c1837. I have found him in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census' (I think he had died by 1901) each time his place of birth was different Redgate, Holsworthy and even Devonport, all Devon. He lived in Stoke Damerel/Devonport, Devon. I thought his Father was William Gilbert from Holsworthy, but I order a marriage certificate and it said his Father was Samuel a Husbandsman. Henry Gilbert married in 1884 4 days before his Son also called Henry married. I cannot find him in the 1861 Census, he would have been with his Wife (apparently not until 1884) Elizabeth (Crimp) and Son Henry about a year old. I ordered a Birth Certificate for the only Henry Gilbert c1837 that I could find, but it was the other one with William for a Father. I do not know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jill |

Thank you Victor But Henry's Father was called Samuel, so that can't be him. I wish it was he is proving very difficult to find. Thank you Tracey in Teeside You have definitely given me something to think about with Elizabeth Crimp and Samuel and Henry (the birth year is right). On their marriage certificate Henry Gilbert's occupation is Mariner (on the Census' it says Waterman) so maybe if it is the right Family he is away at sea. A lot of my Family seem to have been Mariners so that may explain him being away and maybe why they didn't marry until later on. He may not have been home very much. Anyway thank you both very much for your time and trouble. If anyone has the images Tracey was talking about I would love the information on them. Regards Jill |

A big thank you to Tracey in Teeside. Thanks to you I have found the Son Henry Gilberts birth. He is actually down as Henry Gilbert Crimp, so he must have lost the Crimp bit somewhere along the way. Probably when his Mum and Dad started living together properly. It means I can order a birth certificate and maybe find out where Henry Gilbert (Father) was born. Also on the 1861 Census where you found Elizabeth with Henry and Samuel, above them on the original image was Ann and William (Son) Crimp who I think is Elizabeth Crimps Mother and Brother. William Crimp was living with Henry and Elizabeth in 1881 Census. Thank you once again. Regards Jill |
