Tracy Thought had occured to me too. Looks like they got married 1866/67 judging by the age of the eldest child in 1871 and there's nothing on ancestry for a possible marriage either in Essex or in Middlesex Double grrrrrrrrrrr! Lou

Jess, Pat, Tracy, Joan and anyone else I've forgotton! Thank you for all your help. Its certainly given me stuff to play around with. The John T Martin born Thorpe is interesting. I have some population stats for the area for the 1800's and the place was fairly small so am sure he must be connected somehow, especially being a Mariner cos most of the Martin's were. Linda also sent me a PM suggesting that maybe he emigrated which is always a possibility but it only says ENGLAND as a birthplace on the 1880 census on LDS so not much help clue wise! Jess Excellent, definitely worth seeing whether I can find Thomas J Pearson in 1861 to see whether it gives me any clues. Tracy I think so, hope my reply above makes some sense! Before I actually thought logically about it I thought that Thomas might give me Mary's maiden name cos all the other kids are born pre civil reg. But the eldest is born 1816 and then every 2yrs till 1828. A gap then till 1840 doesn't seem believable somehow! Lou

I'm a little suspicious about this guy to begin with! He appears on the 1841 with my 3xgrandparents and again on the 1851 census listed as SON aged 10 BUT that would have made Edward 58 and Mary 46 when he was born. Not impossible but quite unlikely, especially as there's a gap of 12 years between Thomas and James (b1828). I have a sneaking suspicion that he belongs either to daughter Mary illegitimately or one of the son's I can't find beyond baptism and it should have said GRANDSON. BUT can't find a birth for him to establish exactly who his parents/mother is and I guess if he WAS born to daughter Mary, she could have married and changed his surname. Grrrrr........! Thomas Martin born Thorpe Le Soken (Thorpe), Essex I have him in 1841 as 9 months old and as a 10 year old in 1851. After that he vanishes. I've checked the name index on 1837online for 1861 and nothing that comes close. Can anyone please find him in 1871-1901, a marriage, a likely death....anything cos I'm beating myself over the head here! In 1851 he's a Fish Boy but comes from a family of Mariners so could be that or a Fisherman or have totally bucked the system and become a hairdresser! Thanks Lou
