I have looked in 1841 when you think he would be there, but he is not. It is a tiny place, so if he was in the hamlet, I would have seen him. I will look in 51 and 61 now. I don't have a name index, so if he has moved out of the village, I have no way of finding him Linda |

Oh bother just looked on GENUKI and there is another Newsham 'KIRKBY RAVENSWORTH, (or Kirkby on the Hill) a parish in the wapentake of Gilling West, and liberty of Richmondshire; 5 miles NW. of Richmond. The ancient name seems to have been Kirk by Ravensworth, being the parish Church to six townships (see Churches for photograph), and standing near the village of Ravensworth. Pop. 161.' (There is further information for Kirkby Ravensworth). Hang on and i will see if I can find it on the 61 discs |

Sorry about that, my cousin just came on messenger. This other Newsham is an area rather than a place I saw one Newby Mary Newby a servant in Newsham ST, i assume that was the hamlet, after that it goes into the other villages in the parish. Have you got them in 1871, that might make it easier for me to look for them Linda |

There were only 89 pages in the parish, so I have looked through all of them! The only Newby I could see is Mary Newby age 20 servant born Barningham RG9 3677 folio 5. Some of the villages in the parish are actually split, so part of them are in County Durham, but I don't have those discs. If he said Newsham he should ave been on the Yorkshire discs. Iwill check the tread tomorrow in case you can narrow the search down a bit. |

Linda - I think this is the family in 1871 1871 John Newby 31 Barnard Castle, Durham, England Head West Auckland Durham Mary Newby 34 Barningham, Yorkshire, England Wife West Auckland Durham Sarah Newby 8 Newsham, Yorkshire, England Daughter West Auckland Durham James Newby 7 Newsham, Yorkshire, England Son West Auckland Durham John Newby 1 West Auckland, Durham, England Son West Auckland Durham information: RG10/4935 Registration district: Auckland Sub-registration district: Hamsterley ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Folio: 57 Page: 49 Barningham on the 1861 is split between pieces 3677 (on yorkshire discs) and 3719 (durham discs) and the hamlet of newsham is in the same pieces. It's also split for 1851 (2381 yorkshire discs, 2387 durham discs) There are also Newshams on pieces 3690 and 3849, both of which are on the durham discs. Barnard Castle is also durham discs (piece 305 on 1841, piece 2387 on 1851) Durham records online have a marriage 1865 W Durham area for John Newby & Mary Stot. They also have a birth same area for John Newby in 1837. If it is Mary Stott then she's on the 1851 with her family, piece 2381, f455 in Newsham as a 12 year old born Barningham |
