Would appreciate advice on where to go to look at what is available to purchase for scotland early census'. At the Glasgow library last time I was there they were not name indexed so had to trawl through (which I'm willing to do again except they are about to close for renovation). plus its hard to get the time to go to the library, most of this is done in the middle of the night! However a very kind person, Liz, looked up a family on the 1861 in Glasgow and I presume it was name indexed and she managed to clear up a 6 year old puzzle! Is there the same available for 1851? are they available for different areas? and if so where from? Thanks Karen

Karen Take a look at this site, http://www(.)gwsfhs(.)org.uk/ You can buy the discs from them. The 1841 and 1851 indices have no birth places on them. Cheers Liz

Thanks Karen for asking the question, and Liz for the answer....I think! I've just sent a cheque for £131. I'd better not look at any more FHS sites for a while. thanks again. Ellen.

The LDS churches have some old censuses -there`s one in the West end of Glasgow or you can order them but I found it was a trawl to read thru the microfiche and turn the handles. Rosalyn

Karen, Yes they are all searchable by name. They are indexed as transcribed, i.e it won't show up any variants of names, but there is a way round that, all is explained on the discs. Karen I have the 1851 names index for Glasgow, Barony and Govan, no birth places on it though. Liz

Liz - you looked up my Simm family on the 1861 earlier and gave me the info I've been searching 6 years for! Thought I should get myself the 1851 as still trying to establish when they got to Glasgow. I had a look at the website recommended here but wasn't sure which bit of Glasgow I should buy. My lot are Hutchiestown, Tradeston, Gorbals etc. is that included in Barony? If you are offering to look at 1851 for me I would be eternally grateful, but equally a pointer in the right direction as to which CD's to buy and I'm happy to go that route. Karen

Hi Karen, The 'Glasgow, Barony and Govan' CD covers all the areas you want. I'll look it up for you, remember there are no birthplaces on this CD. Cheers Liz Oops, sorry, just saw it was the Simm family. Liz

Karen these are the Simms in 1851, with no birthplaces given, so we can't be definite they are the right ones. There are no other Simm names above or below these three. BLYTHSWOOD Ward 583 Enum dist 6 page 23 Peter Sime age 27 TRADESTON Ward 622 Enum dist 25 page 4 Robert Sim age 24 TRADESTON Ward 618 Enum. dist 32 page 9 Robert Sim age 24 Cheers Liz

Liz - thank so much for looking. the Roberts are the right age and strangely he always seems to be Sim rather than Simm - except now I have two! - as neither of them or Peter are with any other Simm's its hard to establish if they are mine. It also shows that their parents were not in Glasgow then, so that narrows things down. My next step is to track Robert from Carse of Gowrie (if he really was ever there) - onwards and upwards! Thanks again Karen

Rosalyn - thanks for reminding about the west end one, I will go and investigate further now that I know what I'm looking for, not far from me either. - Karen

Karen, I think you need to book for the LDS society. If your quite near there, then the Mitchell Library has all the censuses. They also have Street indexes for the Glasgow area from 1841. Liz

Liz - its years since I tried the Mitchell Library, we went there when we had just started and were a bit overwhelmed by what to look at and how. It rather put me off but now a few years on you are right I should give it another go. I think now I am clearer on what I need to look at and how to find the info I need, plus have narrowed down the issues to investigate and have clear pointers to follow. I mainly remember looking at the census' that weren't indexed and having no idea of the area realising I'd have to go through it all page by page, now I have better info it will be better. I think perhaps too much too soon in the early days when fired with enthusiasm! Just a matter of finding the time to make a trip before they close for the summer refurbishment. I know from reading posts on here that I should be very grateful that I live in the same place as the records are, just that its easier to do it at home in the middle of night when everyone else has gone to bed!
