I've been trying for weeks to find a marriage online for a Michael McAdam and an Elizabeth Sutherland. I don't subscribe to Ancestry.com and I have checked FreeBMD, NEbmd and www.familysearch.org on the census section. As I am relatively new to Genealogy I am stuck but other people don't seem to be able to find this marriage. Michael McAdam married an Elizabeth Sutherland in Whitehaven, Cumberland. They had seven/eight children from 1859 to 1881. Michael's parents are John Owen McAdam and a Mary Ann Greggs, I don't know much about Elizabeth Sutherland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Ben McAdam.

Ben You won't find a marriage on the 1881 census. A census is a snapshot record of everyone living at a particular address on census night. It will have husbands and wives if they are together but not details about their marriage. Marriages will be listed on Freebmd/Ancestry civil reg (same info) which is incomplete. All GRO marriage indexes are available online for a fee at www*1837online*com [replace * with .] Or you can look through them free on microfiche at various records offices and libraries. The big index books are available at the Family Records Centre in Islington. However, not all marriages are on the index, because copies from local registrars did not always get to the GRO. If you have an idea about whereabouts the marriage took place you can apply to the local registrar. nell

How do you know where they married? Could it be elsewhere? Do you know that Elizabeth was definitely SUTHERLAND at marriage? Could that have been her maiden name, she married Mr. X and so you will need to look under her married name rather than Sutherland?

And if its any consolation I can't find a marriage between two people when I KNOW it must have taken place within a two-year period somewhere in London. nell

I live in a place called Chester le Street, County Durham which is a little too far for me to travel to Whitehaven, Cumberland as I've a little nipper to look after on me own, and Islington is like another country for me lol

It's not guaranteed to be Sutherland, it comes off another person's tree as she is a Sutherland herself. However, when I check censi from 1881-1901, they are in Durham, in 1871 they are married and still in whitehaven.Ben.

Ben I have re-sent the email with the reference for the marriage you have asked for. Don't post another thread until you have received my email as anyone else who tries to look for you information will have to pay to get it as I did. It will be a waste of money for someone. If you have not received my email in a short while send me a message direct and I will try again. The reference you need is Sep 1858 Whitehaven then I think its 10B 600. If you send for the certificate at the GRO they should find it. By the way Sutherland may not be the name as it is not listed. Cheers victor.
