How about a thread where newbie could be adopted by an experienced researcher who could coach him/her through the first few weeks. I would be prepared to help..... Peter

It is a lovely idea, but i would not want to commit to that, depending on your 'Newbie' you could end up doing all the work :/

Hi Peter, It sounds like a good plan but as Sammy says it needs to be pointed out that the newbie does the work and the volunteers point them towards the right website or record office. Gwynne

I'm willing to adopt. I'm even more willing to adopt a tall dark handsome 25-35 newbie Think this is a brill idea if it means someone gets help few their first few steps of hunting - sign me up

Hi, Perhaps there could be a thread where those prepared to volunteer outline our counties of interest and other 'expertise'. I imagine most volunteers would know the basics - GRO, IGI, census, PRs etc. I've done quite a lot of work with wills and have searched seamans' records at the NA so would mention that. Others who have done a lot of military research may mention that. Newbies could 'pick' a volunteer whose interests coincide. Just an idle musing. Gwynne

Gwynne That's a really good idea. I like the idea in principle of adopting a newbie BUT although I've been researching a fair while now, I'm no expert on everything and what use would I be to someone researching a county that I have no knowledge of or someone with a family full of, say, lightermen in London. I had to ask the other day what a lighterman was! Grouping people with shared interests and counties would be beneficial to both parties Lou

Hi Peter, what a fantastic idea, im a newbie who is british but because of hubby's job im overseas which makes it harder for me, so anyone if you want to be my GR leader give me a shout! but please have patience with me, though have signed up to different websites and want to achieve it on my own but to have someone guide me or tell me where to go next would be fantastic. Well done for the idea, when I get there I would love to give all the help I can, Deb x
