I have only recently started looking into my Scottish relatives so please bear with me. I have tracked down the marraige of James Ballantyne b. app.1837 and Agnes Watson b. app 1847 in Gordon, Berwick on 6th Feb. 1880. The cert states his father is John and his mother Esther nee. Lee. Is there anyone who has the software to try and trace further back than this without me having to order the cert? Any help greatly appreciated. |

Have you tried the free census site?http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ (note the lack of www.) Check the coverage page first to see if your areas are there. 1841 seems to have the most Scottish coverage. Also try www.familia.org.uk to find the local library details. They may offer free census look-ups. Also - for the name Ballantyne - if you get stuck look up Valentine. I have found some of my Valentine's mistranscribed as Ballantyne so it may be come in handy for you. Julie |

Hi Daniel, have you looked for their parents deaths on Scotland's People? If it was after 1855 and you find them, they should then give you their parents names (if they were known by the informant) Good luck Christine |
