Gemma Report 23 Mar 2005 23:57

I have been unable to access this site till today, so sorry for anyone waiting. I did not have any luck in Ireland, I spent 8 days wondering around the countryside of Longford ( with father Sean Casey), and did not manage to find any of my relitives graves. I found the whole system of records very hard to locate.....so I really did not have any luck finding anything out for anyone on this site....nor did I find out anything of my own family, except a coule of newspaper references. Sorry if anyone had their hopes up...but the records are like looking for needles in a haystack ( they were for me anyway ) Gem the first message reads;- **I am going to Longford (Southern Ireland) arriving on Tuesday very early morning and am staying for 9 days. I wont have be driving, and am only really going to Longford. If anyone has Longford ancestry let me know, and I will see what info I can find at the Longford archives and Library. I will also be taking loads of pictures if this is any help to anyone. Before I return I will be going to Dublin Library to search for BDM'S, however I have no idea how easy this will be till i'm there. If you know loads of details on your Irish ancestors then I may be able to look them up, but I believe you must know their Parish of birth or it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Gem

Gemma, If you have the time, I'd appreciate if you could have a quick look for these: William MEHIGAN - c1882/3 father: John Mehigan mother: Honora Driscoll I've been told that he was born in Kildare, County Cork. I cannot find that town, so I'm thinking maybe it was suppposed to be Kinsale, County Cork. He had a brother named John - not sure if older or younger. Mary DEVLIN - c1880 father: Edward Devlin mother: Anne Bonar My gran said that her mum grew up in Quigley's Point, County Donegal (I found it near Moville; seems like a resort type area) Mary didn't know when she was born. She gave her age as 30 when she married in 1910, that's why I'm saying 1880. If you could check for the births for William, John and Mary - I'd be very grateful. Maybe then I could poke a hole in a brick wall! Margaret

Hi Gemma, Please Please if you have time could you keep an eye out for any Lewis's My Better halfs 2nd Great Grandfather Benjamin Lewis married in Scotland and we did think he was Scottish but now we have found him on the 1851 census living in Scotland with his birthplace listed as Ireland. We know from his marriage and death certs that his father was a Joseph Lewis and we thought his mother could be a Fanny Hazlett although the handwriting is terrible. So we checked the IGI and found that a Benjamin Lewis was infact born to a Joseph Lewis and Frances Hazel on the 8th July 1814 and Christened on the 10th July 1814 in Temlemichael, Longford. We are so stuck on this line and have been for a while and dont know where else to turn. Thankyou so much. Shaz xx

Might you be able to look up a birth for me (on the GRO index, if they have it there). George PALMER/COWDY born between 1931-1938 in county Armagh (prossibly registered in Loughgall). It's N Ireland, if they have the GRO index for that. If not, then obviously it doesn't matter. I'd be ever so grateful if you could have a look, Gemma. George is my great uncle, and trying to pinpoint under what name and when he was born (cos he won't tell me anything!).

I have taken on board all the details for request's which have been given so far, and will search for them. CHLOE - Sorry Dublin won't have Northern Ireland for those dates. So I can't help you there.

Gemma, Just thought of this: There are also ancestors in Thomastown, Kilkenny (different family from before). Could you ask the kind folks in Dublin if they have an address for Thomastown where info could be looked up etc. Thanks again. Margaret

Gemma

Gemma Report 25 Mar 2005 22:57

I've noted down all the reply's, and will look. The only problem I may face is if they were Catholic, as permission has to be granted for these look ups..apparently. Ps MIKE.... I feel pitty for anyone almost hairless....hence why I married one!!!, so I will have an extra special look for you.
