My great uncle enlisted in a Territorial battalion of the Kings regiment at the beginning of WW1. He was discharged in 1916 because of illness. Does this mean he will have received a pension? If so, are the pension details separate from his service record? I was told that his service record was one of the 'burnt' lot but wondered if I can find him anywhere else. Can anyoneadvise me please? Thanks, Lilian

Have you tried looking for a medal card for him? Paul

Short answer is No you will not find his records anywhere except TNA Kew. You will get his medal entitlement on line through Kew and if he was killed during the war his date of death etc is at the CWGC site. You can google for both web site addresses. Pension records are separate from his army record. Can't remember off hand what the WO number is but if you get online to TNA www(.)nationalarchives(.)gov(.)uk you can download leaflet on army and also find out which WO series Pensions are in. The burnt ones have been fully transcribed but not all survive. only less than 60% have survived. If he was an officer these records have survived almost intact. Janet

Yes, Paul. I have got his medal card and thank you for your reply. Janet, thank you for the information. Janice Walker kindly looked for his service records in Kew but found that his was a 'burnt' one. I've only recently found out that he was discharged through illness. Now you've told me that pension records were stored separately, I need to find out if being a Territorial, he would have been entitled to a pension. Many thanks, Lilian
