I have seen 'Stationary Engine Driver' several times in my family. As these would be steam driven cranes and the like. I assume a Fireman would be coaling the engine as on a locmotive. |

My GGF was a stoker in the navy - this was recorded as Leading Fireman on his record. When he left he worked as a stationary engine driver at the gas works. I always thought that was some sort of train used just inside the gas works but realised some time back it is actually controlling the engine that runs something like conveyors or other machinery. |

Any steam engine which provided power for machinery in a factory (or cotton mill, coal mine etc) would be called a stationary engine. |
