Hi all,i,ve been looking for a birth now for weeks, with no success, any ideas most welcome..John Connaughton,on 1861 census is listed as 10 yrs old, born Stalybridge,,,so have searched Ancestry for 1851 and two years either side, with every variation i can think of,including first name only..Nothing on Lancs or Cheshire BMD either..Already sent for two certs that i thought it may have been,no luck..Really need it so i can get the cert and an addy for 1851 look up...Kind regards,Ross.. |

FreeBMD just updated (more up to date than Ancestry) might be an idea to give them a go? Chloe |

Hi Ross I have checked 1837online for 1849, 1850 and 1851. The only one I could find was born in Chorlton, not Stalybridge. Sam |

UPDATE:The name has been mistranscribed on many different occasions including at least one marriage cert..I found these earlier today, does anyone think these could be him??? John Canavan 1850 Ashton U Lyne John Chadderton 1850 Ashton U Lyne John Cunningham 1850 Ashton U Lyne None of them sound plausible to me,but i suppose its possible as my grt grt grandfather would have had a strong Irish accent, and wasnt able to write English..Regards,Ross. |

Ages were only rounded up on censuses in the 1841, not in the other censuses. How come he had an Irish accent if he was born (and assuming bred) in England? Chloe |

Hi Chloe, lol,my grt grt grandfather was the father of the 10 yr old i am looking for,he would only have been in England about 3 yrs when John was born c1851..I am presuming he registered the birth as he did all the other children..Regards Ross. |

Hi Chris,i suppose they are possibles, but every census says either Stalybridge or Dukinfield...Is there any way i could get the parents names of the two you have found without ordering certs or visiting London & Birmingham???Regards,Ross. |

No they're not BUT the 1841 spefically rounded up ages over 15. I thought you meant that every census did that on purpose. It is possible he was born later or earlier, of course it is, but if an age is consistent then it's less likely. Am I making sense? Chloe |

Hi Ross Just a thought and you may already know this in which case I will go away.....!!! As someone who lives on the Dukinfield/Staly border, bear in mind that back then SOME parts of both towns had BMD registered at Stockport, not Ashton under Lyne. Do NOT ask me why but it took me 2 years to find my ggrannie's death cert cos she happened to live in the part of the village at that time that came under Stockport. Again with another ancestors marriage Lou x |

Hi Lou,no thats something i wasnt aware of..I was going to message you as i know youre from that neck of the woods, and you have looked up for me before..I might try the ones i found earlier and see if any of them are him,it wouldnt be the first time the name has been misspelt badly,i have one Connaughton on birth cert spelt Conogden!!!Thanks Lou..Regards,Ross. |
