Jas was a common abbreviation for James. As there were only a few hundred Jasons in the whole country in the 1800s, I doubt that it had a common abbreviation.

Cant find that name so would assume its short for jason or james. The only similar name i found is the following: Name: Jace Gender: (suitable for both) Origin: American Meaning: Moon-Variation of Jacey Hope this helps!

Hi, Jas was short for James, maybe Jase is a variation. Gwynne

What date was it from? If it is before the 1960's I think it is unlikely to be Jason. Is the image available online so we can look and see if we think it really says 'Jase'? If it does, I would guess James unless it is recent. Kate.

Thanks to everybody, the son was James so maybe it is James. It wasnt an image Kate, its on IGI James Nicolson or Lauder, Birth 1808 Auldearn Nairn Scotland. Father Jase Nicolson. Mother Jane Lauder. Cheers all. Viv
