Margaretta Vaughan appears on the 1871 census living with her mother Susan (or Susannah on subsequent census) and some of her siblings in Southampton (Alfred, Caroline, Joseph, Susana). She is 13 in 1871. By 1881 she is no longer living at home. I can't seem to find a marriage which fits with any subsequent census. Also I can't find her brother Alfred anywhere in 1901. He was 20 in 1891 and again, living at home in Southampton. I can't read his occupation in 1891 so don't know if he is away at sea or something? Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Trying to look at Alfreds occupation for you, I cannot find Alfred Vaughan aged 20 in Southampton in 1891 Marriages Mar 1874 JONES Charles Hay 11b 199 PRICE Eliza Hay 11b 199 VAUGHAN Margaretta Hay 11b 199 Williams John Hay 11b 199 Thsi marriage fits, Maragretta has no middle name according to her birth reg, between 1874 & 1881 she could have been widowed & married again. There are lots of Margaretta Jones marriages between 1875 -1881 One Margaretta Williams marriage - 1878 The male surnames there were Henderson & Good For info (helps to know where all are born) 1871 Susan Vaughan 30 Littlehampton, Sussex, England Wife St Mary Hampshire Margeretta Vaughan 13 Southampton, Hampshire, England Daughter St Mary Hampshire Joseph W Vaughan 10 Woolston, Hampshire, England Son St Mary Hampshire Susana E Vaughan 6 Southampton, Hampshire, England Daughter St Mary Hampshire Caroline L Vaughan 4 Southampton, Hampshire, England Daughter St Mary Hampshire Alfred E Vaughan 11 months Southampton, Hampshire, England Son St Mary Hampshire

Couldn't resist a look! I think it's seaman aswell. The S matches that in Susannah and the M, though obscured a little looks like those above it. I think because the M is so large it makes the word look like a much longer one, which in fact is just the swirly bits!! Regards, Jenny

Thanks everyone for your help. If he was a seaman (which is actually a high possibility) where can I find him? Do they do census on a ship away from port? Katy

He should still be there somewhere Katy, maybe just under initials.

Hi Katy, You posted a request on my thread (1861 Hampshire Lookups) for help with Susannah Vaughan? Do you remember? Well I looked on Ancestry at them in 1871 and noticed that she had a son born in Woolston around 1861 so I checked Woolston on my '61 census and have found them! Clifton Cottage, St. Mary Extra, Woolston. Susaneh (thats how it spelt) Vaughan, wife, married, 20, butchers wife, born Littlehampton, Sussex. Margaretta, daughter, 3, born Southampton. Joseph, son, 5 months, born Woolston. Susaneh Erridge?, mother, widow, 44, born Littlehampton. Jonathan Erridge, brother, 12, labourer, born Isle of Wight (cant read where). John Erridge, brother, 10, scholar, born Littlehampton. Alfred Erridge, brother, 8?, scholar, born Littlehampton. RG9 680 folio 46. Hope this helps, Julie

Katy if he was on a ship away from port he would not be included on a census.I have looked at the image again.Definately seaman .His brother Joseph above him is mate merchant service which is merchant seaman
