Hi all, wondering if anyone intends on searching the Wigan Parish Records in the not too distant future and could maybe help me at the same time.? I am still trying to locate a marriage which MAY have taken place around 1809, he, James Shawcross was suposedly from Shawe Hall in Flixton and she, Sarah Hartley was supposedly from Strangeways Hall, which I am now told comes under the district of Wigan.. Having had a really generous lady aleady scour Flixton Parish Records for me, and having checked Salford Parish Records ( where they lived at some point ) and having eliminated the IGI for the Cathedral Records, I am left with an obvious Wigan ... incase they married nearer to her abode (I had been thinking that Strangeways was near to Salford ! just shows you what I know !!) I am looking for someone who may do me the kindness of looking under the Wigan Parish Records for me next time they visit. This couple, James & Sarah, had children 1809 - 1829 inclusive, so I was thinking around 1808 give or take a year possibly ? for the marriage. It may have been as early as 1806 but I really do doubt that. I know when this elusive guy James Shawcross died ... but I just can't find a marriage or his birth date .. I'm hoping that his marriage MIGHT give me his age at the time .. but knowing my luck :( ... anyway, I really would be grateful if anyone could help me ... thanks in anticipation..Elaine

Hi Elaine, are you sure the parish records office would be Wigan because although Wigan is a part of Greater Manchester it's about 25-30 miles from Salford. I would have thought it would have been somewhere closer but please anyone correct me if I'm wrong! regards, Rich

Hi Rich, I wrote to the Lancashire Records Office about their 'Whats been done before' section .. to see if anyone had logged 'Shawcross' info. After explaining my dilema, they sent an e.mail back yesterday saying that if Sarah Hartley was from Strangeways, had I checked the Wigan Parish Records since they come under Wigan ... I must admit, I was a little shocked myself. I don't know Manchester or districts at all and always thought (don't know why) that Strangeways is close to Salford. Its like the Flixton records being at Sale ?? a little odd but who am I to say any different ...YOU know how desperate I am getting, I'll take advice from anyone from now on. NO Transport till next weekend incidentely. Elaine.

Thanks Rich, I know your very busy, so I'm reluctant to let you know ... but hey, just in case anyone else reads this, it may help.. looking for marriage between James Shawcross & Sarah Hartley (believed to be from Strangeways Hall) They had children 1809 - 1829 inclusive, so I'm assuming they married around about 1808 but couldn't tell you which church in the Strangeways district?. If anyone could look 1807/08/and maybe into 09 or even if anyone could give me an indication to the churches in the Strangeways district that I could look under, it would help..I'm lost on this one Rich and my enthusiasm is dwindling slightly ...I'm sick of banging my head against this particular wall. Elaine (with loads of grateful thanks for your offer!) will do your look up for you next week..once kids have gone back to sch!
