Please can someone help me with this. It's a birth certificate. The 'f' could well be 's' but it's not used all the way through so I didn't want to change it too much. The dots represent letter I have no idea about! Hope this is good enough! Please help me! Best I could do, Jane. GC obviously does like the B with a tail! Chloe

Hi Chloe, Your B with a tail is a double s - called a "scharfes s" or sharp s. My German's a bit too rusty to attempt a translation though. You could replace the character above with ss and people would understand. For example, Dass means "that". Rick.

How did you find a German birth certificate? I'm trying desperately to find my maternal great grandparents, both born in Germany, probably Prussia. Jan

zwanzig is twenty, Tag is day, lohner is labourer. I think ge.chlecht is supposd to be geschlecht which means sex or gender. Rick.

Could have understood it better if written exactly as on certificate...but have had a go. Jacob Spengler living at Sobernheim-of Evangelist religion. His wife Katharina Spengler born Hexamer , Evangelist. Living with him in Sobernheim. 26 October 1895, born male child vorname of Heinrich. Hope this helps . If it matches everyone elses translations you've cracked it.

Hi Chloe, has anyone sent you a proper translation yet? If not, I speak good German and can send you one if you want. I think you have quite a few of the letters wrong though, but I think I know what some of them are. If you can't rewrite it properly could you scan it? Liz

Thanks to everyone. I think you've cracked it between you. To Jan - I was lucky. Through GC I made contact with my nana's nephew's granddaughter, and the certificate I have is of her great grandfather, my nana's brother. She scanned it in for me. all I knew before today was that they were from Germany, and that I am extremely lucky to have found this! She got the certificate from her grandad, it's dated 1925 which means they went back for it for some reason. I know my ancestors went back to Germany but came back to England cos they were shuned and told they were 'too English' charming!! Thanks everyone for all of your help. Yay! I still can't wipe the smile of my face! Chloe
