Thank you for the information. I was trying to look up that record but there was a cliche either in my computer or on Free BMD Index because it wouldn't open up. My gut was telling me that this may be the record I was looking for. I will take a closer look at the census (I can look it up) and see if that was her younger brother John LIttle living with her.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. After receiving a message from another member regarding his Elizabeth Little (we corresponded before), I ordered the marriage certificate and will keep my fingers crossed it's the one.

You can get marriage details from Parish registers at the records office, but you would have to trawl through every church register in the area.

Your best bet might be to change your thread title to ask if anyone is going to visit the records office.

Alternatively you could order each cert stipultating fathers name and you will get part of your money refuunded if it doesnt match.

I thought that vital records are also stored at the Carlisle Records Office. I tried the census look up method searching for the surnames of each of the males on the BMD Index and nothing conclusive. As far as the evidence of these sisters being married--I don't havfe any. I'm just trying rule out with marriages first because there are far too many deaths with the names of Mary and Elizabeth Little in Cumberland County.

It isn't possible to look at the actual records in England..........unless you know in which Parish the marriage took place.

And, to find that info, you need the cert............

The best way to start is to look at the census immdiately following the marriage, and try to locate the female by trial and error...........inputting her forename and birth details, then scrolling through the results trying to match the surname to one of the 'others' on the marriage reg'n pages.............

I presume you have evidence that they actually married?

Mary Ann and Elizabeth's surname is "Little". They were born in Wetheral, Cumbria in 1837 and 1839, respectively. They were children of Robert and Annie (Henderson) Little. Unfortunately, I do not have the spouse's name and that's why I'm asking for someone to help look up the actual records; especially for Elizabeth because there are 6 possibilities. Without the name of the spouse, I would have to apply for each certificate.

Researching ancestors in England can be difficult from the States. I am trying to locate a marriage for two sisters; Mary Ann Little b. April 4, 1837 and Elizabeth Little b. July 19, 1839 in Wetheral. I believe that Mary Ann may have married between 1861-1871. She was listed living with her parents Robert and Ann Little on the 1851 census and I think I found her living in Castle Sowerby on the census of 1861. Elizabeth was also listed as living with her parents in 1851 but couldn't find her in 1861. She may have married between 1851-1861 in Cumbria.

I did find a record for a marriage of Mary Ann Little in June 1863, Carlisle (Vol. 10b, Page 162)--this may the one but there's no way of knowing unless I order the certificate.

I also found six records for a marriage of Elizabeth Little that could fit the period.
