John Cornforth married Esther Jane Hopps in 1904 in the parish Church at Stillington, Co Durham. He is listed as 27 years old. His father's name is recorded as William Cornforth. I cannot find him in the 1901 census, but in the 1891 census there is a family listed from the Northallerton District but John is only 9 years old. That would make him 22 when he married, not 27.

John Cornforth was my grandfather but I never knew him. My tree is stuck at this early stage and I don't know where to look now. The 1911 census would provide answers but that is 5 years away.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd try to find out if he actually was 27 when married. 27 and 21 could be easily confused.
If you know when he died then the index for his death (can be looked up in Ancestry) will probably give his age and also there may be mention of the funeral in some local newspaper.

There is a William Cornforth with wife Alice and son John at Toxteth Park Liverpool in 1891. RG12-2938 folio 14
John is age 15 a Painter and his dad a Watchmaker.
What is interesting is that William was born in North Sheilds.
