Rachel read the tips for newbies to help understand. Work backwards from yourself and the solid facts you have, dont try to do to many lines in one go.

Buy that birth cert and you will have mums maiden name and the addy where the child was born, the fathers name and occupation.

Working backwards by certificates and using the censuses and other information is the way to go. Dont buy credits on here - its expensive. Get yourself a sub to ancestry - all the cenus 1841-1901, the full bmd and lots of other stuff.

Rachel,

To order birth, marriage or death certificates, do the following:-

Go to www.gro.gov.uk

Follow the instructions for Ordering Certificates Online (in the box to the right side of the first screen, click on it)

Fill out the application form.

Do not worry about the "exact date of birth/marriage/death"

When asked "Do you have the GRO reference" answer YES

The GRO reference is the sequence of two numbers to the right of the registrations you have been given above (eg, for your nan's birth ----- Birth Reg for Gertrude A Plaskett Dec Qtr 1910 Bromyard 6a 455 ---- the GRO number is 6a 455).

Each certificate will cost £7, which you pay on a credit card, and will take 4 to 7 days to reach you in the UK.

You may also order through the freebmd site, by clicking on Ordering Certificate. These certificates are ordered from the local registry office, and cost £7 + postage.

Never EVER pay more than the £7! There are some sites that offer to get certificates for you, and charge as much as £25 to do it!

Ask on here for help

...... we're always willing to get others addicted to genealogy!!!

Good luck

Rachel,

I would think that the birth and marriage references above were from the FreeBMD website (www.freebmd.org.uk). This site is transcribing all the GRO indexes from 1837 onwards into a searchable database. Not complete yet but useful upto the early 1900s. The reference numbers are those you would need to order the certificates. Each cert costs £7 if ordered online.

Have you had a look at the CWGC site for John Thomas Moores death?

http://www.cwgc.org/

If you can identify him and click on his name you may be lucky and find the name, well the first name, of his wife.

You need to buy your nan's birth certificate, it will give you the full names of both her parents. I can't find a registration for Gertrude though, where have you had her date of birth from?

When you mention buying credits for the records, do you mean the credit from this site? If so, NO! They are definately not worth it, you can get the same info elsewhere for less or sometimes even free!

For those of us with rubbish geography, where are Bromyard and Suckley?

Hello all. I'm very new to this and i'm at a stumbling block already. Im trying to find my nans mum, and husband. And her mums name too. All i have to go on is the surnames. help .. Can anyone give me any tips on where to find them. Is it worth buying credits for the records? are the records any good ?
My nans name was gertrude anne tipton(nee Plaskett) born 23/11/1910. Her mums name was Plaskett (nee moore) i have no first name for her. Plasketts mother was called Mrs Moore (no first name again) She was married to a John Thomas Moore who died in the battle of somme in 1916. I cant seem to find any info so far. Im probably not looking hard enough. If anyone can point me in the right direction id be ever grateful ;o).. OR if anyone wants to do my tree lol (Just joking) ;o) Kind regards Rachel xXx
I forgot to say the family were from bromyard or Suckley .
