Hi Ian,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my request for information.

I believe Catherine's marriage to Frederick was her first. I feel the problem with her name is an administrative one, her father's name on her marriage certificate is James Maffen, in the census he is James Conway.

I do not think I will ever find out why.

Hi John

Is there any possibility that your g-g-grandmother's maiden surname was indeed Conway, but she was previously married and widowed? I experienced a similar problem with a marriage record that I had, and it took a while to figure out what was going on.

You might have to widen your search somewhat and make sure that Frederick Hemmings wasn't her only spouse.

Hope This Helps.

John

I am desperately seeking information regarding my Gr,Gr,Grandmother Catherine Conway. She was born in Darlington, Co.Durham in c1870 and married Frederick John Hemmings in Stockton-on-Tees on 22 June 1889.
I am trying to find out why her maiden on her marriage certificate is given as Maffen, and on the birth certificate of her daughter Louisa born in 1901 is given as Conway.
There is no trace of Catherine Maffen apart from her marriage.

I would be grateful if anyone could help clear up this confusion.
