As far as I know, you didn't (and still don't) have to produce a marriage certificate to prove that you are married when you register a baby.


So, yes it is possible that you would have mmn showing when they were not married IF the father was willing to have his name on there as if he was married (or if he had done the registering)

hi i looked up to and including 1926 but no luck

was james charles in the army they could of got married abroad?

The marriage would most likely to have been in England under Glanford Brigg, Goole or Thorne area's (Lincs or Yorks)

was they from scotland/ireland as these are the only ethels i could find 1866-1920

The marriage I'm looking for is between

ETHEL MAY STRINGWELL & JAMES CHARLES

She was born in 1898 and the first child was ETHEL CHARLES born about 1919 with the mothers maiden name listed as Stringwell

well my paternal gran wasnt married to her second hubby when he registered two births one in 1911 and one 1913. he registered them as if they were married but they didnt marry till Oct 1914 . i have all the certs. .

So guess it was saving face as they were living together.

Please can anyone tell me, when a mothers maiden name is present on the Birth Registration Number, does this mean she is definately married.
Or could she register the birth under the Fathers surname and use hers for the MMN, even if they are not married.
I hope I've worded it right.
