Hi, I am very new to all of this. I have found a couple of names I needed in the records, but what are the code numbers next to the names? Can I use these codes to find out more details? If so, how do I use them. Do I have to go to the place stated? If I do, is there a charge to look at these records in detail?
I am sorry for all the ??? but I am feeling very lost and frustrated and I am begining to think that this whole search thing could be very expensive in terms of travel and charges etc.
I would really appreciate some helpful advice. Thanks for looking, Kind regards, Jen

Don't panic!!!!!!

I assume you have looked for and found a birth, or marriage, or death?

The refs following the names are the GRO refs which you need IF you wish to purchase a copy of the relevant cert.............

But, if you care to post the full info on here, it can be fully explained, and advice given about how to proceed further..........

Hi Jen - bless your heart - welcome aboard this fascinating family history 'bug'.

It sounds like you have found some births or deaths or marriages and I think the numbers you quote are probably the volume and page numbers you would need to order the certificates.

Let me know what you have and I will see if I can help you further.

Right OK... I found the birth of my mother. Patricia Ann Burt, she was born in hull The ref no is 2a 338
DOB 1946 there is no specific date.
Then I found my grandmother Irene A Crossland who married John P Burt in Hull 1940,
That is all I know. Irene had four children.... Malcom, Patricia(my mum) Marjorie and Janet.
I know at some point they moved from Hull to Hailsham. The reason I started all this is that I don't know who my father is, my mum married a man in 1967 when I was a year old. I have had no contact with anyone since 1984. My birth certificate has a dash under Fathers name... It seems that the little information I was given as a child turned out to be lies. I am now 41 and am thinking if I don't soon find some answers, it will all be too late.
I know I have an Uncle Malcom somewhere.... I am thinking that I might get some answers if I can find him.... so there's my little story. Any help would be brilliant as I feel like I am really out of my depth. Kind regards, jen

Forgot to say that on my birth certificate is the word "adopted" typed on the right hand side... does this mean there may be an original birth ertificate with more information on? or is it likely to be the same? Kind regards, jen

I don't know about adoptions, but I would think that if the certificate you have has a line through where the name of the father should be, then any original certificate will be the same.

To buy any of the certificates you have found go to:-

www.gro.gov.uk/content/certificates

You can order them using

name
qtr.
year
district
volume number (this is the 2a in your first example)
page number (338 in your example)

The certificates cost you £7 if you tick the box saying the full GRO reference is known.

There are five Malcolm Burts on the current electoral roll. Unfortunately I am unable to access full details, but one of them may be yours and someone on here may be prepared to pull off the list and forward it to you.

You might also add to the Adoption Thread on the Tips Board because someone on there will be able to tell you in an instant, for definite, whether you have your original Birth Certificate.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Jennifer
Have you got your adoption certificate? if soyou could contact the adoption society they will have your records and believe they have to tell you details providing you can prove who you are.
The hospital where you were born may know details and find any close family member to your Mum and explain how important this is to you to find where you come from.
I am sure someone will help hope this helps and you find your father.
Good Luck
Wendy

Hi Jennifer
You probably will have been registered when you was born in your mother's maiden. It might be a good idea to search the birth index for your birth.
However, when a child is adopted and after the adoption has been granted in the court... the law states there is an amendment made to the original birth certificate to show 'adopted'.
This is what you have.
You will then be placed on the Adopted Children Register and you will have been issued an adoption certificate. The short version is like a regular 'short birth cert' which makes no reference to being adopted. The full adoption certificate gives court and adoptive parents details.
Hope this helps you understand how the adoption process works.
Cheers Gerry

Perhaps the man who married Jennifer's mother in 1967 was the person who adopted her.....so maybe Jennifer has the original birth certificate.
I know of someone who stayed with his birth mother and had to later be adopted by her husband ( who was not the child's father)
