I am trying to find further details of my great, great grandfather, John Quarmby. He was born about 1852 and married Ellen Haigh in Dewsbury on 3rd March 1873. There is a blank on the marriage certificate where John's father's name should be so I cannot trace back to his birth details. I suspect that he might have been illegitimate and took his mother's surname but I cannot confirm that. Census records 1881 and 1891 indicate that he was born in Stalybridge Cheshire/Lancashire but I cannot find a record of his birth there.
He was a coal miner and it might be of significance that the 1861 census shows a John Quarmby aged 10, living in Dewsbury with another family (called Woodcock) and listed as a mining apprentice. The connection with Dewsbury makes sense since he married there - but there is no record of any connection with Stalybridge.
John and Ellen had 7 children, Joseph Robinson, Esther Ann, Jane E., Edwin Haigh, Azubah, Emily and Martha Ann, all born in Yorkshire but later living in Dukinfield, Cheshire.
Can anyone help me find further information on John and his parents?
