ed = eccleisatical district .. you will see all that at the top of then cencus page when you open it. parish, ward etc.
institution /vessel will give you the name of the boat/workhouse at top of cencus page when open,

dont stop asking for help if you need it., we all need to at times ,always someone about who will gladly help..

Hi Lisa,
We were all newbies at one time, the only way to learn is to ask. Nobody minds how many times you ask for help.

Hi Lisa,
Been checking an ED is an Enumeration District.......
Enumeration District An area within a Registration Sub-District with specified boundaries. The basic unit by which the census returns are arranged. The returns from each district were made in an Enumeration Book.

Thats what it states!!

Hope it helps.
By the way I was looking for your Richard in1881...I cannot find him.
