Sally -- you should put the info about the other Aldreds in this thread, and maybe the URL for the other threads where they were discussed. Anyone who just sees this thread and didn't see the earlier ones has no idea who they are!

Hi Shirley -- since your Aldreds aren't related to Sally's, you'd be best to start your own "thread" -- a topic of your own that people would be more likely to see than if your message is buried here with Sally's.

Go to the Trying to Find board and click on "Add topic" up top. Be sure to put details in the subject line -- your grandmother's full name (including surname) and approximate date of birth would be most useful. And include in your message all the facts you know.

But what the heck.

This seems to be your grandparents' marriage.

Marriages Dec 1925
Aldred Annie E Sopp Edmonton 3a 1424
Sopp Thomas W Aldred Edmonton 3a 1424

That's the information you need for ordering their marriage certificate. Before you order it, you need to go to:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

and search for that record, and then click on the spectacles beside the names to make sure the information has been copied correctly. Then you order the marriage certificate here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

and it will tell you the two spouses' approx ages and fathers' names. Once you have their fathers' names, you can look for the parents' marriages, find them in the 1901 census, and so on.

If you need help tracking them back from there, follow those instructions for starting a new thread and ask away!

Shirley -- or was your grandmother from Norfolk? If so, and if you know her full name, is this her birth?

Name: Annie Elizabeth Aldred
Year of Registration: 1900
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Yarmouth (1837-1924)
County: Norfolk
Volume: 4b
Page: 36

If it is, you go through the same process of finding the record at FreeBMD, looking at the image, and ordering the certificate. If you're not positive, you should search at FreeBMD for the birth of an Annie Aldred around the times you said, say 1890 to 1910 for good measure, and see whether you do recognize one.

Ordinarily it would be best to wait for the marriage certificate so you at least have an approximate date of birth, and also so when you order the birth certificate you can say that you only want it if the father is the name on the marriage certificate, and you get charged less if it isn't the right one.
