I have what I think is my family on 1861 census. John WRIGHT (c1831) HD, Sarah Ann (c1831) Wife, Elizabeth (c1857) Daur, William (c1857) Son, John E (c1861) Son. St Martins Parish, Liverpool. Then in 1871 & 1881 I had what I thought was my family but am now unsure. On all three census it shows Sarah Ann was born in Bristol and some of the family names and dates are the same., but there are a lot of children on 1871 that I can't find births or deaths for and I think I may be following the wrong line. Can anyone trace this family for me please or advise? I have access to Ancestry.

As birth registration was not compulsory until 1875, these births may simply not be registered

Does the father's birthplace tally and does his occupation remain constant?

Hi Janet Im new to this but had a go anyway and used the info you gave on your post and found the following and thought of some reasons for the discrepancies see what you think as when I look up families there is often discrepancies from year to year. .

1861 census
9 Harkin Street Liverpool Lancashire

John Wright age 31 born 1830 Walker Cheshire rock labourer
Sarah Ann Wright age 28 b 1833 Bristol wife

Children
Elizabeth Wright age 4 born 1857 Liverpool
William Wright age 4 b 1857 Liverpool
John E Wright age 1 Month b 1861 Liverpool

1871 Census
120 Athol Street Liverpool Lancashire

John Wright Age 40 born 1831 Chester Cheshire Labourer
Sarah Wright Age 38 born 1833 Bristol Gloucestershire

Children
Elizabeth Wright age 14 born 1857 Liverpool
William Wright age 12 born 1859 Liverpool
Elizah Wright age 10 born 1861 Liverpool
Enoch Wright age 7 born 1864 Liverpool
James Wright age 4 b 1867 Liverpool
John Wright age 4 months 1870 Liverpool

DISCREPENCIES

Elizabeth: matches 1861/1871
William: there may have been a transcription error in the 1861 census as otherwise they would have been twins or very close in age if both born in 1857 and a 7 can easily become a 9. Also on the original document his entry was on the next page and the transcriber had written his age in the female column first and then crossed it out.
Elizah: As she is listed as 10 in 1871 she may have been born shortly after the 1861 census and I did find an Eliza’s birth registered in 1862
Enoch : You wouldn’t expect to find him on the 1861 census as he was born in 1864, couldn’t find a birth record for him but Enoch may have been a nick name as very unusual

BIRTHS

Several listed for both Elizabeth and William in there respective years I’ve got the details if you want them.
ELIZAH JANE regd sept 1862 8b 36

ALSO
Several John Wrights deaths between 1861 and 1871 and it is possible that the John Wright born in 1870 was named after his older brother who had died? As this was often done to commemorate the older child.

MARRIAGE
John Wright and Sarah Ann Price
Liverpool Reg’d June 1856 8b 266

My apologies for not replying I get sidetracked!!. The information you have found tallies with mine so I feel I am following the correct family. It gets difficult because it is a common surname. As Reggie says maybe Enoch's birth wasn't registered but I have found several marriages for an Enoch Wright maybe one could be him, will have to send for cert.

Thanks for your time and effort.
