my bestest friend of 32 years has been with her OH for 21 years .
He was adopted at the age of 6 months (in 1967)
i have found his birth reg .. would he be able to order his cert.

He just decided that he would like to find out about his mother , but he doesn't want to do it through the courts as there is counseling involved and he dont want that.

Hi Rose,

I was adopted in 1959, ordered mine no problem.

Hopefully someone who has ordered an 1967 one will confirm it is possible.

Not sure what the law is now regarding obtaining birth certs pre adoption .

Hi,
If you were adopted before 12 November 1975, you must attend a disclosure interview with an approved adoptions worker (in Scotland this is not a requirement).

On your original birth certificate you should find out exactly when and where you were born, the name you were given at birth, your mother's name, your father's name (if it was given) and the name and possibly relationship to you of the person who registered your birth. i think this chap wants to know all the info he can, but i dont think he is sure that he would meet her .
but he wasnt sure if he was able to order the cert for himself.
but it is his birth cert so i didnt think there would be a prob , but i needed advice 1st thanks alot

As you say Rose, it's his birth certificate, so I can't see a problem with him obtaining a copy.

anyone can send for anyones birth cert -in the UK anyway, ( might not apply to recent ones without additional info

BUT

you cannot access your adoption file without councilling. ( which he doesnt sound bothered about anyway.)

the adivse i was asking was if you was odopted can you get your birth cert before odoption.
he doesnt realy want to see his real mum so he doesnt want counciling .
he wants to try and find out his own way ,

ps minnie ppl, who are odopted react in diff ways he was the one given up at birth im sure that is really hard to forgive no matter what the reason

You are required to attend an informal meeting with an approved adoption advisor for confidential guidance, either with your local Social Services, at the General Register Office or, under certain circumstances, at the agency that handled your adoption.

You can also choose to see an adoption worker at another local authority. The General Register Office will forward your original birth information to your chosen approved adoption advisor.

Why do I have to see an adoption advisor?
Before 12 November 1975, many parents were led to believe that the adopted child would never be able to find out their original name or the names of their parents. These arrangements were made in good faith. However, changes in legislation allowed adopted people to discover their original details. It is important that adopted people understand what this might mean, not only for themselves but also for others.


However, although I am not 100% certain about this, I do not see any reason why an adoptee who knows his/her full birth name needs to go through the above when applying for their full certificate from the GRO.

Yes your friend can apply for his original birth certificate.
In fact anyone can order any birth certificate from the GRO website.

I think we are talking at cross purposes here.

What you say I believe to be corect, IF you dont know your birth name - then you have to go thru the procedure to find out, before you can order the cert.

Absolutely nothing to stop you ordering it if you know the name you were given when you were born.

if you do know, and want to access the info from an adoption file, THEN you have to go thru the process of councilling. ( and only the person themselves can apply for that bit of info)

Yes, there is complete freedom to request original birth certificate if the precise details are already known.
The law has built in the counselling clause only for those adoptees who need to approach social services for records to provide them with details of their origin,(theirs by right!) which were often hidden in earlier adoptions, so that they may be aware of implications of searching before starting.
